Falls remain the biggest killer in telecoms. These five controls save lives.

Falls from height are the leading cause of fatalities in telecommunications construction. The controls are well known; consistency is the challenge.

1. 100% tie-off

Twin-lanyard full-body harnesses, connected at all times during climbing and transitions.

2. Pre-use inspection

Every harness, lanyard and connector checked and recorded before every climb.

3. Rescue plan on site

A trained rescuer and rescue kit present — not a phone number.

4 & 5. Weather and fitness

Stop work for lightning and high winds, and ensure every climber has a valid fitness-to-climb medical.
